Small Block Chevy 350 Build Pt. 8 | Installing Camshaft and timing components

Subscribe
Executive Summary

This episode covers installing the camshaft and associated timing components on a Small Block Chevy 350 during a rebuild. The work includes lubricating and installing the cam and lifters, fitting the timing chain/gears, installing the timing cover and front seal, and checking rotation/clearances before reassembly.

Build Sequence

1. Prepare block and components

Clean the cam bore, journals, and lifter bores. Ensure cam bearings are correctly installed and rotate freely. Gather new parts (cam, lifters, timing set, seals) and tools.

2. Lubricate cam journals and lifters

Coat the cam journals and lobes with assembly lube and apply assembly lube to the faces of the lifters to prevent initial wear on first startup.

10mbeginner

3. Install lifters into bores

Install lifters into their original or correctly indexed bores, pushing each fully into the lifter bore so they sit flush and can move freely.

20mbeginner

4. Install the camshaft

Carefully slide the camshaft into the block, using a cam installation tool or by rotating slowly and keeping it aligned to avoid damaging lobes or bearings.

5. Install and torque cam thrust plate

Fit the cam thrust plate (retainer) and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specified values; check cam endplay with a dial indicator or feeler gauge and adjust if required.

25mintermediate

6. Install timing set and align marks

Position the timing chain and sprockets with the marks correctly aligned (cam and crank marks), seat the chain on the gears and confirm correct timing position before proceeding.

30mintermediate

7. Install timing cover and front seal

Apply gasket or RTV as required, install the front timing cover, and press in or drive the crankshaft front seal ensuring proper seating and no damage to the seal lip.

30mintermediate

8. Install harmonic balancer / crank pulley

Install the harmonic balancer or crank pulley, ensuring the keyway lines up with the crank and the balancer is fully seated against the crank snout.

20mintermediate

9. Install pushrods and rockers, set initial lash

Fit pushrods into position and install rocker arms. For hydraulic lifters, preload the lifters according to the cam manufacturer's instructions; for solid setups, set lash clearance as specified.

40mintermediate

10. Prime oiling system and rotate engine to check

Prime the oil system (manual priming or by using an oil pump priming tool), then rotate the engine by hand several full revolutions to check for smooth rotation, correct timing alignment, and to verify there are no interference or clearance issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to replace lifters when installing a new cam?

It's strongly recommended to install new lifters with a new cam, especially if the lifters are worn or the cam is a different profile. Reusing old lifters can cause premature wear or damage to the new cam.

How do I know the timing marks are aligned correctly?

Align the marked links on the chain to the timing marks on the cam and crank sprockets per the timing set instructions. After assembly, rotate the engine two full revolutions and recheck alignment. If uncertain, degree the cam for precise timing.

How do I check cam endplay?

Use a dial indicator or a set of feeler gauges with a straightedge and pry tool to measure endplay after installing the thrust plate. Compare to the cam manufacturer's specified endplay range and take corrective action if out of spec.

What torque specs should I use for the cam thrust plate and timing cover?

Use the factory torque specifications for the SBC 350. If the spec isn't available, refer to the cam/thrust plate manufacturer's instructions. Over-torquing can warp parts; under-torquing can allow movement or leaks.
