Executive Summary

The video shows a DIY prototype for a steel desk clamp designed to hold headphones. It covers measuring and cutting steel stock, drilling and welding the pivot/jaw assembly, finishing (grind/paint), adding rubber padding, and mounting the clamp to a desk for testing.

Build Sequence

1. Design and measure

Decide clamp geometry to fit your desk thickness and desired headphone overhang. Sketch dimensions and mark cut locations on steel stock.

2. Cut steel components

Cut the flat bar and square tube to the planned lengths using an angle grinder or cut-off saw. Cut pieces for the clamp jaw, arm, and mounting plate.

3. Drill pivot and hardware holes

Clamp parts square and drill the pivot hole in the arm and matching hole in the hanger/jaw. Drill holes for the threaded rod or bolt that forms the desk clamp.

4. Fit-up and tack weld assembly

Assemble the pieces in a vise, verify alignment and tack weld the main joints (arm to base, jaws to mounting plate) to hold geometry before final welding.

5. Final welds and grind

Complete full welds on all load-bearing joints, then grind and file welds smooth where desired. Ensure pivot bolt clears and moves freely.

6. Prep and finish (paint)

Clean metal surfaces, sand as needed, and apply paint or protective finish. Allow adequate drying time between coats.

7. Install padding and hardware

Stick rubber or foam padding to clamp contact areas and assemble pivot bolt, washers and nuts. Install threaded rod or tightening bolt for desk clamping.

8. Mount to desk and test

Clamp the assembly to the desk, hang headphones, test pivot movement and clamp security. Make small adjustments to tension or padding if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What desk thickness will the clamp fit?

Adjust the threaded rod or clamp jaw opening to match your desk thickness. In the build you can size the clamp jaw or use a longer threaded rod to accommodate thicker desks; ensure the base plate and jaw have clearance for your desk edge.
